[MMU Digital Technology Solutions Professional – IT Consultant Specialism]

Job Summary

We seek someone to join our small, dynamic, and growing organisation. As part of our team that writes service management software, we need someone to carry out 1st line support, minor coding, customer relationship management, project management, training, and implementing systems with new customers.

From day one you’ll be talking to customers, working on small coding tasks, helping with onboarding new customers, and generally being an active element of our development team. You will be working alongside our existing implementation manager (Chris), and contributing wherever you can make the most difference. As well as managing and solving day-to-day customer requests, you’ll be improving our documentation,  contributing to our library of help videos, attending customer meetings, and generally working on our future development direction.

We are a small team and we are looking for someone with a desire to solve problems using programming, and also an interest in the customer and product lifecycles. This dynamic role combines elements of the core DTS programming modules and brings in the additional knowledge from the IT Consultant pathway.

  • Hours: Mon – Friday 08:00 to 16:30, with 1 hour for lunch. 20% attendance at MMU during term time (currently 1 day per week).
  • Location: St James Building, 79 Oxford Street in Manchester city centre. Just 5 minutes walk from MMU, diagonally opposite Oxford Road Station.
  • Dress code: Smartish casual, including your interview, we don’t expect suits. When we are meeting customers we either dress smarter, or present a united front in branded tops.

Degree Apprenticeship

A key element of the role is the degree apprenticeship. We offer this in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University, and you will be enrolled on their Digital Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship. This is a 4 year course, working towards a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree from Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as a Level 6 degree apprenticeship.

We have been working with MMU to provide apprenticeships since 2018. Our first Digital Technology Solutions Software Engineer apprentice, Zahir, graduated in 2022 with a 1st Class BSc (Hons). James followed in his footsteps in 2023, and we have 3 more apprentices on the course graduating soon! There are only 12 of us at EPIX, and we all work closely together to support all the apprentices throughout their course, including mentoring between apprentices to help transition through the years. One of the key differences between us and other apprenticeship providers is that you will be getting stuck in with real work from day one. Our  apprentices seem to appreciate the varied workload, and the difference they can make to our customers – and we are hoping that you will bring the same vitality and enthusiasm to working proactively with customers.

Over the course of the 4 years at least 20% of your working time will be spent in “off the job” training. This includes attendance at MMU during term time (approximately 1 day per week, but varies depending on course structure), and training provided by us. As part of your normal day you will be gaining valuable experience relevant to your course, as well as working on R&D tasks to extend your learning.

Responsibilities and Duties

This is a varied role, which will adapt as you progress through the course, and includes:

  • 1st line support – answering the phone, diagnosing problems, talking to users.
  • Coding (bug fixes and small features) – we work in PHP, Java, Python, and SQL. From your first day you’ll be actively participating in the development cycle as a developer. We throw you in at the deep end, but also make sure you have the support from the rest of the team whilst starting you out on simple tasks.
  • 2nd line support – helping the team with problems that fall within your area of expertise.
  • Training users – attending our customers’ office (anywhere in mainland UK) to train new users, and refresh old users.
  • Documentation – designing and starring in YouTube videos explaining the system, writing manuals to support user training, and updating online help articles.
  • Marketing – working with our existing marketing team to build new content, and keep our main website working as a sales funnel.
  • Project management and project documentation – starting with small feature requests, you will be managing projects ranging from initial request from the customer, financial costing and prioritisation, to final delivery.
  • Stakeholder management – you will work with customers, senior management, and the development team to effectively ensure that the development process is delivering value. You will act as an effective bridge between the stakeholders and the developers by having a foot in each camp.
  • Strategic thinking – by the end of your degree you will have a deep understanding of our customers and our products, and be beginning to contribute to future product and/or market direction.

Qualifications and Skills

You need to qualify for the MMU Apprenticeship Degree – by September 2024 you must:

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Have the right of abode and right to work in the UK to qualify for funding.
  • Meet course entry requirements – Applicants should have a minimum of 104 UCAS points at A-level (grades BCC) or an equivalent (eg BTEC DMM). You also need GCSE Mathematics and English Language (grade A*-C / 9-4) or equivalent .

  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of (at least!) hobby programming.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • A creative mind with an ability to suggest improvements.
  • Confidence and creativity with office productivity applications  – word processing, spreadsheets, presentations.

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary £16,000 p.a., with planned annual increase of 25% each year, giving a salary in the 4th year of £31,250.00 give or take.

Applying to the University

Once we have offered you a position, you need to complete your university application and enrol on the course. This usually takes place immediately after the A-Level results are announced, so you can enjoy the last of the summer and start with us on the 1st September. The university application is not difficult to complete and we will help and provide guidance when required. Obviously, if you are still in sixth form, you will need to complete your course and achieve your grades.
