Your Future Today
Your Future Today by Jess

Welcome to my second Your Future Today article. This time I’ve been looking at the incredible potential of 3D printed batteries.

Introduction

Originally known as Rapid Prototyping Technologies, the concept of 3D Printing has been around since the late 1900s.

In 1980, Dr Hideo Kodama was the first person to file a patent for this marvellous product. His application was denied, however, when he missed the one-year deadline to file the full patent. Four years later, a French team decided to run with the idea of 3D printing. Despite their interest and intentions, the project was abandoned as business interest at the time was low. It wasn’t until 1986 that the first patent was registered.

In the early-2000s, this incredible technology became commercially available to the public, soon becoming a popular topic and spiking the interest of the world.

The technology is slowly becoming a part of everyday life, being used in construction, engineering, medicine, aerospace and much, much more. This blog post will be looking at the work of Sakuú, a California based company that is renovating battery manufacturing through the art of 3D printing.

Batteries power the world around us – big or small, we use them daily to power the devices and machines we use. Sakuú’s mission is to power the renewable energy revolution with industry-leading batteries printed from the world’s most sustainable manufacturing platform.

3D printing batteries with Swift Print

Sakuú Swift Print solid-state batteries are designed with performance, safety, and customisability in mind. But what does this mean? What is the product this company is so confident in?

Performance: With a higher capacity and longer shelf life, these batteries could be used over longer periods of time without needing to be replaced or recharged. Sakuú also promises a fast charge time of reaching at least 80% in under 15 minutes, and with their high-volume production via the Kavian platform, these batteries could save time, money and energy in the long run.

Safety: These batteries are made out of a non-flammable, non-toxic material, increasing their safety in the outside world. Sakuú targets industrial and electrical customers which means this requirement for safety is of the utmost importance to the company. The batteries are also stable in accordance with the industry standard and certifications.

Customisability: The main advantage to 3D printing a battery is the accessibility and creativity it allows. These batteries can be printed in any shape or size, forever changing the way we think about product design. Custom shapes make way for endless possibilities and reduce the size a product needs to be to contain a battery.

Manufacturing batteries with the Kavian platform

The Kavian platform allows for high-volume, automated, cost-effective production of batteries in any shape or size. The Kavian platform could have ground breaking potential if it lives up to the benefits it claims to produce. There are three main benefits to the Kavian platform. It provides a high volume, cost effective, and sustainable way to create this product. Sakuú has also decided to bring the future of technology into the modern day by using AI quality control to inspect the batteries during production.

The most important part of this process however is that by using Sakuú’s Powder to Powder technique any materials left over after the creation of the batteries can be reused or recycled, eliminating excessive use of materials and waste in the process. This environmental benefit is important and beneficial, especially in the day and age we currently live in. This sets Sakuú apart from most of its competitors and gives them a head start to creating environmentally friendly batteries.

Conclusion

Overall, Sakuú has designed and developed a product that stands out from its competitors due to its environmentally friendly and revolutionising production methods. Sakuú’s mission to power the renewable energy revolution is in progress as it continues to develop the product and gain investors. Maybe one day soon, we can power the world through 3D printing.
